When kids ask for a pet, they think about having an eternal playmate, but you have to make them aware of the responsibility this entails.

 

From the age of six, children begin to make friends and not only desire the company of children his age, but also of a pet. If your child has begun to ask insistently for a dog or a cat, you have to talk to him. Take your time and find a quiet place without distractions where you can explain everything that involves owning a pet.

 

You have to make him see that he will be responsible for feeding, bathing, vaccinate and, in general, of all the pet needs. It will be a shared responsibility because you're also pending, but you know it will fall most on him.

 

It is essential that your little knows that this is not a toy that he can keep or give away when he no longer wants to play with, instead it is a living being who will escort him for many years and requires a lot of care.

 

A good start for him, is to be present throughout the process that involves getting a pet from the store or shelter, to the choice of where it will live in.

 

Be patient with your little one because at first, it will be difficult for him to take care of his new pet. Do not scold him harshly if he forgets something, but let him see his new friend needs to be feed, bath and go for a walk just like him.

 

With the passage of time you'll see that he becomes more responsible and begins to talk to you about things that maybe you had not noticed. This does not mean that you should not monitor him, however you must be aware because with the passage of time he will have to learn new things.
